Note:
The novel is told in two voices— thirteen-year-old Sophie’s and that of her older sister Libby who has Cerebral Palsy and requires assistive technology in order to talk. The story is a fantasy set in medieval times about the friendship between a girl and a hawk, and is Libby’s way of saying goodbye. As Sophie’s Bat Mitzvah approaches, Libby’s life ebbs away. With all but the final chapter of the story written, Sophie finishes it, with the two sisters’ voices coming to a satisfying conclusion. Sophie is a bright and appealing protagonist, critical of many of the assaults that our consumer society makes on girls her age.
