Varian Fry was an American who helped artists and writers hide and escape from the Nazis during World War II. Fry’s chief assistant, Danny Bénédite, set up the hiding place in the south of France, Villa Air-Bel, where refugees lived in safety until they could be smuggled out. The author, grandniece of Bénédite, tells his story through the eyes of one of the hidden children, Aube Breton, daughter of the famous surrealist poet.
