Note:
Lilly’s mother volunteers at Shalom House, “a place for older people to live if they need extra help”. The first time Lilly accompanies her mother, she clings closely and is too shy to talk to the residents. With each passing week, Lilly begins to warm up and to feel more comfortable, until she ultimately chooses to celebrate her birthday at Shalom House and invites all the residents as her guests. Lakritz does a wonderful job of depicting the activities and the people in nursing and retirement homes. The residents attempt to engage Lilly in conversations that are friendly, warm and very realistic. Moreover, Lilly’s transformation is portrayed with empathy and care. The illustrations are bright and fun; they show a happy place with friendly people. The Jewish content is minimal.
