Note:
A family observes the Rosh Hashanah ceremony of tashlich by going for a walk in the woods. They each repent of their sins, make a promise for the new year, eat apples, and then recite a prayer written by the mother of the family. This is a departure from the traditional practice of communal prayers and it tends to be a little too idyllic. Still, tashlich is not represented in many books for children and the environmental message is strong. The Sydney Taylor award winning picture book, New Year at the Pier by Wayland, is the first choice.
