Note:
Originally published in 1971 to acclaim, this is the story of a German-Jewish family who flees the Nazis, living in Switzerland and France and, at the conclusion, about to leave for England. Told from the point of view of 9 year old Anna who doesn't completely understand why they have to leave, the story is at once humorous and poignant. Anna, her brother, and her parents all have to make major adjustments to new countries and customs, languages, loss of status, and their declining financial situation. There is one chilling account of the Nazi's treatment of a prisoner but other than that, the Holocaust is dealt with obliquely, without gruesome details. Despite its serious subject, the effervescence of the writing wins readers' hearts.
