Note:
Set in Germany in 1955, this is one of a few novels for children that explores the aftermath of WWII and the Holocaust. Peter has a dim understanding of his country's recent history but he's unconcerned and happy with his parents, friends, and a friendship with a Jewish artisan who is working on rebuilding the local cathedral. When he discovers he was adopted, thrown from a train by a Jewish woman on her way to a concentration camp, his entire identity becomes problematic. The plot hinges on this discovery and what began as a convincing story loses its momentum as Peter's parents and friends help him to reconcile his present with his past. For younger readers than Pressler's Let Sleeping Dogs Lie, also set in post-war Germany.
