Note:
A strong historical novel set in Berlin during the 1930's as German liberalism crumbles and the Nazis are poised to take over. The characters, with the exception of Albert Einstein, are Gentile intellectuals and university professors. Chronicled through the eyes of a precocious 13 year old girl are the turbulence and artistic daring of the Weimar Republic as well as the increasing suppression of freedom. The title refers to Nazi book burnings and the fate of one fictional family represents many of the experiences of anti-Nazis. Compelling because there is little written for teens from this perspective or about the immediate historical antecedents of the Holocaust.
