Note:
Originally published in 1961, this is a slightly revised edition of a vintage story about a family of eight children, two parents and a goat that mysteriously appeared one Passover. Set in Lithuania, it is a heartwarming, somewhat romanticized, tale told in chapters of shtetl life and Jewish holiday observance in a bygone era. An ambitious daughter who teaches herself to read and to study with the boys is an outstanding character. Illustrations are updated, though still simple and in black and white, and continue to illustrate an old world setting. Yiddish and Hebrew words, which are sprinkled throughout the story, are defined and explained in a glossary at the end.
