Note:
A sequel to Double Crossing, this finds a Jewish immigrant family trying to adapt to their new home in America. Raizel, the main character, loves school and her father realizes he must learn English. He also makes the difficult decision to give up Orthodox religious practices in order to succeed in business. Raizel's mother understands neither her husband nor her daughter and she is concerned about her son, Lemmel, who eventually runs away and becomes a petty criminal - one of many homeless immigrant boys trying to survive on the mean streets. Told in the dual voices of Raizel and Lemmel, the story captures the sights and scenes of New York's Lower East Side as well as the dilemmas faced by immigrant Jews.
