Set in a shtetl, this story's old-fashioned feel is enhanced by full page illustrations in muted watercolors of a humble family and their Hanukkah observance. Without enough oil to fry eight nights worth of food and too much snow to get to the store, Mama tells the children that she needs the kind of miracle that Papa has just told them about when he recounted the Hanukkah story. She shows them the jar in which their scant supply of oil is kept and they label it "the miracle jar," hoping that it will be. When there is no oil left for the eighth night, Papa's faith and Mama's resourcefulness do indeed create a mealtime miracle.
