Note:
A creation midrash by the 16th century Kabbalist, Rabbi Isaac Luria, is the inspiration for this beautifully illustrated picture book. It tells the traditional story of the world's creation up until the point at which God filled a clay vessel with light. When the vessel cracks and breaks, sparks of light scatter all over the world and from then until now, it is the job of people to find the shards of light and put them back together - thus making the world complete and perfect. Zalben's version of the story is ecumenical, showing how all people share in the job of repairing the world. Her paintings and collages - so different from those in the little books she wrote about animals - express the wonder and hope that is integral to the story.
