Note:
This biography of Sharon, part of the Modern World Leaders series, is striking in that the author betrays no contempt or hostility toward his subject; he simply illuminates Sharon’s triumphs and failures, as well as key events in his personal and family life. Unlike many other books dealing with Israeli subjects, its photographs are straightforward portraits and news photos, not designed as propaganda statements but as enhancements to the narrative. But, like so many other series books for students, it has some errors. The most egregious error is that the discussion of the Six Day War omits Egypt’s blockade of Eilat and its expulsion of the UN peacekeepers in the Sinai. Instead the section begins: “Israel started the war.” Still, compared to other treatments of Sharon, which often serve as polemics against Israel rather than attempts at objectivity, this one is a welcome departure. Includes index, bibliography, and timeline.
