Note:
Set in the Fort Ontario Emergency Rescue Center that was established in Oswego, New York to house European refugees during World War II, this is a quiet story about a Jewish girl and her mother who find a home and safety there. Because of their wartime experiences and the disappearance of her husband, Rebekkah's mother's adjustment is slow; she has a hard time overcoming her fear and of letting her daughter out of her sight. Gradually, and with the pull of Rebekkah's higher spirits, they are both able to embrace a life of freedom. The illustrations enhance the story, which lacks the drama of novels about Fort Ontario written for older readers: Two Suns In the Sky by Miriam Bat-Ami and Good Night, Maman by Norma Fox Mazer.
