The worst disaster in New York City’s history before 9/11 was the fire aboard the General Slocum steamship in 1904, in which over one thousand people died. The narrator of this lyrically written novel is one of the dead: the ghost of a teenage girl who lingers in the world until she can bring those responsible for the fire to justice and clear the boy she loves from charges that he started it. The setting in what was then called Kleindeutschland and later, the Lower East Side, is richly populated with memorable characters – good and bad. A sub-theme of anti-Semitism – the accused boy and his father are Jews – enriches an unusual story.
