Note:
Set in Brooklyn in 1947, there are two main characters in this appealing story. Joey is a nine year old, racially mixed orphan who is accepted neither by his African-American peers nor by some of the people in the Jewish community where he goes to live. He has learned to be tough, to look after himself, and to expect nothing from others, including the stern, disapproving grandfather whose home he shares. Jackie Robinson is the baseball hero whom Joey comes to love, even though he plays for the Brooklyn Dodgers instead of for Joey’s favorite team, the Yankees. Through many scenes of baseball games, Robinson’s stoic struggle against racism is portrayed, mirroring in some ways, Joey’s own. The Brooklyn setting is especially well-realized and the baseball lore that pervades the book seems authentic.
