Note:
"With wonders and miracles, the sky over Jerusalem touches the world below." Drawing on strands of legend, Podwal celebrates the sky above the city and the places in Jerusalem that are sacred to Jews, Christians, and Moslems. Each page of short, poetic narrative is faced by an illustration that blends the realistic with the symbolic. Podwal's talent as a colorist is fully apparent in the illustrations, which end with rainbows in the sky. This hopeful point of view is different from Sylvia Rouss's recent book, Tali's Jerusalem Scrapbook, and both should be read by children so that they get a sense of Jerusalem's contradictions. Podwal's book is similar to Jerusalem, Shining Still by Kuskin and O Jerusalem by Jane Yolen, two older and similarly poetic treatments.
