Note:
The third book in a trilogy that also includes I Have Lived a Thousand Years and My Bridges of Hope. Bitton Jackson continues the saga of teenage Elli and her mother, who emigrate as refugees to New York following World War II. Warmly welcomed by family and friends, mother and daughter cope with the strangeness of a new country and gradually adapt. Elli becomes a teacher and is able to get the education she was deprived of in Europe. Much of the story is told through the lens of Elli's romantic life: several men fell in love with her. A formal, somewhat self-conscious style underscores Elli's sense of distance from a country that seems much less respectful of tradition, much more liberal in its social customs than what she has known before coming to the United States.
