Note:
This photoessay is similar in format to Smith's My Secret Camera, about life in the Lodz ghetto. The subject here is Elsie Leitz, a young German woman whose wealthy family manufactured cameras. Elsie and her father protected Jews, helped them to escape, and eased their lives when they could. Because of this, Elsie was arrested and imprisoned, although later released when a friend bribed the SS. The black and white photographs are large, clear, and dramatic; the text is brief. A good high/interest, low/vocabulary choice for teens.
