Thirteen year old Alexandra is pretty, popular in school and in her Catholic youth group, and not especially concerned that her immigrant parents won't talk about their lives before they came to Canada. It takes a set of coincidences to bring matters to a crisis: Alex's first boyfriend is Jewish, she finds some old pictures hidden in her mother's dresser, and a friend from her parents' past comes to visit. When Alex is finally told that she and her family are Jewish, that they conceal this to protect her from anti-Semitism, and that her parents are Holocaust survivors, she chooses honesty and compels her anxious parents to do likewise. Alex is a believable heroine and her parents' dilemma is portrayed sympathetically. However, a plot propelled by coincidence makes this less convincing than Wiseman's previous books.
