Note:
Ungar's signature illustrations - intensely bright, filled with details, and suffused with a warm, humorous feeling- are the most successful element in this third Rachel story. Set (nominally) in Chelm, it reveals, through its characters, no large truths about the human condition, as do traditional Chelm tales, but rather, provides a structure for Ungar to build a mildly pleasant story. Hoping to change their reputation as fools and show the world how wise they really are, a delegation of Chelmites goes to Warsaw, where they expect to find a solution. Rachel goes along and identifies what they need: a library. So they go back to Chelm and build one, stocking it with books from their homes. Who can argue with the need for a library? Even so, the story is pallid.
