An illustrated version of the Purim tale, set within two framing stories. In the slightest of them, a present-day grandmother tells her grand-daughter about an incident that happened during her last Purim in Vienna. The story then switches to Nazi-occupied Vienna, where a group of children listen to their rabbi tell them the story of Queen Esther. Nazis come to arrest him but after he sees the children to the street, he vanishes. The grandmother, one of the children who were with the rabbi, ascribes this to a miracle, thus ending the Holocaust strand of the story with hope. The illustrations are an important part of the story, especially in establishing mood and setting. This novel way of remembering two epochal Jewish narratives is very effective.
