Note:
Excellent color photographs accompany a lucid introduction to Reform, Conservative, and Reconstructionist synagogues, without specifying denominations. Jewish ritual objects, prayer, synagogue services, holidays, and life cycle events are explored along with the synagogue library. Scenes inside the synagogue show men and women davening together, with the women wearing tallit and kipot. The point of view is affirmative, inclusive, and positive. There is no glossary or index but the pronounciation of Hebrew and Yiddish words in given and the book is short and well-captioned enough to make locating information easy. The final two pages show six architecturally different American synagogues. This is part of a series that includes books on the mosque, a Catholic church, and a Hindu temple. Well done!
