Note:
Instead of focusing on the difficulty of leaving Europe and the tribulations encountered on the ocean voyage to America, this book examines the legal, physical, medical and emotional experiences of immigrants once they arrived at Ellis Island. Well documented, with archival photos, excerpts from diaries and journals, and comments from Ellis Island employees, inspectors, and medical staff. Brief stories of well known immigrants are included but there is no special emphasis on Jewish immigrants, some of whom are identified as Polish or Russian rather than Jewish. The illustrations and design of the book augment an engrossing narrative, providing both intimacy and immediacy.
