Note:
Adapted from the Talmud, this is the story of Dama and his father, Nesina, who live in ancient Israel. The story involves Dama's refusal to disturb his father's sleep, although by doing so he foregoes a lucrative sale of gems. Later, he is rewarded when his cow gives birth to a red heifer, which is purchased for the same price he would have got for the gems. Dama's respect for his father is summed up in his words, "All my life I have been careful never to call my father by his name, never to sit in his place - and never to wake him from sleep." Modern children may express respect for their parents in other ways but this provides a object lesson in the form of an engrossing and nicely illustrated story.
