Note:
A charming picture book about a hungry bear cub who is drawn by the smell of food from his cave into the midst of a Purim celebration. Everyone but one little boy assumes that the bear is a human wearing a very convincing costume so after he eats his fill, they poke and prode him to join the revelry. When the bear growls and shows his teeth, the people scatter, the little boy is proved right, and Little Bear returns to his cave and sleeping mother. Howland's illustrations, like those of her book, Matzah Man, are filled with humorous action and story enhancing details. A note about the holiday is appended. Two other funny picture books about bears who wander into Jewish holidays are Once Upon a Shabbos by Jacqueline Jules and The Chanukah Guest by Eric Kimmel.
