This is the first book in a projected four book series about two Jewish sisters who change their identities after their father's death to evade a mercenary stepmother. Taking to the road, they settle in a small Indiana town and try very hard to mask their New York accents and big city outlook. The town's people are welcoming, except for a high school classmate of the youngest sister. When that girl, the not-yet annointed Rose Queen of Venice, Indiana, disappears, the sisters become sleuths, solving the case with clever detective work. Although it is established clearly that the sisters are Jewish, that doesn't make much of a difference to the story. The writing is fresh and fun and the characters lively so this is a welcome addition to that small collection of lighthearted reading for teens.
