A beautifully written first novel about a girl named Mayim who lives in Israel at the time of the Yom Kippur War in 1973. She has had to leave her best friend and her beloved grandfather in Jerusalem when her mother gets a job in Haifa. In Haifa, Mayim makes many friends around the neighborhood, Jewish and Palestinian alike. She also develops a bond with a mysterious stray dog who lives in the wadi. The old dog is known to everyone in the neighborhood by a different name and they all help care for him. Mayim's affection for the dog helps her recover memories of her dead father- killed in an earlier war - which she feared she would never retrieve, and to gain courage. An unusual exploration of a child's feelings and a vivid rendering of a fraught time in Israeli history.
