Note:
A Holocaust novel for mature teens, this convincingly blends teenage angst with the terrors of war. It is about a group of Jewish refuge children on a perilous and, for some, fatal, journey across Europe. The main character is a homely girl who is derided by the other girls for being fat, ugly, and "Old Jewish." As their situation grows more perilous, Esther takes on false identities to evade the Nazis and to work with the French resistance. She grows in courage and self-esteem, gaining the strength to go on when her beloved friend, Walter, is captured and sent to Auschwitz. A "good German" makes a somewhat contrived appearance at a critical moment but aside from that, the novel rings true.
