Note:
A searing portrayal of life in the Warsaw Ghetto. The main character is a homeless orphan who lives by his wits and initially finds the Nazi occupation of Warsaw exciting. When he attaches himself to a Jewish family who is forced into the Ghetto, he has his first experiences of being part of a family and acting to help others. Because the child's frame of reference is so radically limited by the circumstances of his life, his point of view - and the author's - tends to perceive the destruction of the Jews as an existential absurdity, with no moral or historical resonance. This is not at all a Jewish view and it limits the book's value for Jewish readers.
