Note:
As the title suggests, jazz is a force in this moving novel that contrasts the sadness of a life within a grieving family with the vitality and sensation of life outside, in New York City. Stricken and overwhelmed by the death of their oldest son, thirteen year old Jed's family is eventually drawn out of their personal sorrow by connecting with the people and places of their neighborhood. Besides jazz, poetry and film-making are part of the story which, despite its subject, manages to be life-affirming and even humorous. Although the family is Jewish and Jewish values inform the plot, there is little that is overtly Jewish about the story.
