Note:
Rumpelstiltskin meets Elijah in this mildly feminist re-casting of familiar folklore motifs. Gittel is a kind, obedient daughter whose domestic talents are exaggerated by her boastful father and exploited by a greedy merchant who gives her impossible tasks so that he can claim the father's meager possessions. Locked in a room with no resources to accomplish any of the tasks her father has bragged about, Gittel helps a dove, a cat, and a beggar (Elijah, of course) who in turn help her. Fanciful illustrations add to the story.
