Note:
Brundibar is a fairy tale opera for children, composed by Hans Krasa, who died at Auschwitz, and performed many times by the doomed children imprisoned in the Terezin concentration camp. On one level, it is a typical fairy tale, with magic animals, a creepy villain, determined little children, and an ending in which good triumphs. Kushner's sassy text captures this flavor. On another level, Brundibar is full of menace, with yellow stars on many of the characters and a villain who resembles a German soldier. The illustrations in particular portray the opera's tragic provenance. They are among Sendak's finest achievements and must be seen and studied to be appreciated. This remarkable book, a landmark in Jewish children's literature, will be enjoyed and appreciated by all ages, for different reasons.
