Although the CIP data calls this a text book, it is also suitable for independent reading because it is written in Burstein's typically lively style and because it gives an excellent overview of Israel, with each chapter able to be read independently of the others. Each chapter's subject is introduced by an Israeli who gives a brief, first-person account about something personal that relates to the chapter topic. For instance, in the chapter on the founding of the state, a middle-aged woman named Tamar recalls how her sister and father were both involved in the war for independence. Throughout the book, there are maps, charts, photographs, activities, Hebrew vocabulary, timelines, and other useful aids to understanding.
