In Kacer's third novel set during the Holocaust, she returns to Gabi, the character based on her own mother whom she introduced in her first book, THE SECRET OF GABI'S DRESSER. Gabi, now thirteen and her mother have been joined by Max, an eleven year old cousin who, alone of his family, has escaped a Nazi round-up. Gabi's courageous mother arranges for them to go into hiding with a Christian farm family she and her late husband know. Driven to rashness by boredom, Gabi and Max sneak out of the confined space in the barn where they hide. They prowl around the nearby forest, making friends with a group of partisans, and spying on the Nazis for the partisans. The suspense of the plot is combined with a thoughtful exploration of what is was like to be hated and hunted and with the portrayal of several heroic Gentiles, based on real people.
