Note:
The grim fate of the Jews of Budapest during World War II is chronicled in this well written novel. The suffering of teenage Marta and her family worsens as the Nazis and the Hungarian fascists who eagerly abetted them implement their extermination program late in the war. Raoul Wallenberg is a character in the novel, portrayed convincingly as the hero that he was. Marta's friendship with a Christian boy adds a touch of romance to the story but over it, too, hangs menace and the threat of death. Eva Wiseman is the author of A PLACE NOT HOME and her writing here is even more polished, more absorbing.
