Note:
Ashes of Roses is the color of Rose Nolan's best dress, the one her Irish mother made for her and the one she wears to work at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company of March 25, 1911. A fictionalized account of the tragic fire that took many young women's lives is the culmination of this novel of American immigration at the beginning of the twentieth century. The Irish characters interact with Jews, some of whom are likable and some of whom, like the owners of the Triangle Shirt Waist Company, are not. The story is a good lead-in to a discussion about ethics.
