Note:
An unpretentious historical novel set in Toronto in 1954 at the time of a disastrous hurricane. Readers get a "keyhole" glimpse into the life of a Jewish immigrant family from the perspective of eight or nine year old, Sara, who, with her brother, is rapidly learning how to be a Canadian while her parents seem to retain their old world ways. Sara's friendship with a neighborhood storekeeper and some sessions with a Ouija board precipitate the story's conflict and suspense. The story ends with the aftermath of the hurricane, which changed Toronto forever. Songs, jump rope rhymes, and commercial brand names are sprinkled through the narrative, adding authenticity to an appealing story.
