Note:
Striking photographs and clear writing are the hallmarks of this handsome book. Bial is an accomplished photographer whose color photos, taken at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, illuminate the text along with black and white documentary photos from the Museum of the City of New York. The physical features and social organization of tenements are described and their centrality to immigrant life is conveyed through the author's comments plus quotes from the reformer, Jacob Riis, and the author, Sydney Taylor. Readers gain an understanding of how people lived and worked in tenements and how they helped to shape the acculturation process. The Lower East Side's ethnic composition is clarified - it wasn't just Jews who lived there. Although Bial is positive about the courage and perseverance of immigrants, his book makes the hardships they endured in tenements very clear.
