Note:
Sepia tone illustrations capture the introspective tone of this story about teshuvah. Knowing that his grandchildren think he is boring because he is always davening, an old man tells them of how he learned to cheat and gamble when he was newly arrived in the United States. When his daughter, the children's mother, got sick, he made his last gamble by betting on G-d to cure her. The children now see him in a new light. The picture book format is inappropriate to the complexities of this story and the ending is contrived.
