Conference Proceeding: Implications of LC Guidelines for the Non-Sorting Control Character Technique for Hebraica Headings (.pps)

The MARC21 standard has a mechanism for suppressing non-filing characters in a small number of specific fields, a mechanism which has not been fully adequate for Hebraica headings. After several years of discussion, the MARBI committee, which sets the MARC21 standards, has approved an alternate method of suppressing non-filing characters that is a great improvement. While this new technique (quite similar to that which Israeli libraries have always been using) has not yet been implemented in most systems, the Library of Congress has already made it public. The lecture will present the new method as it applies to Hebraica headings and point out some limitations in its application.
